Day Four: Adapting to a new city…

While most people call Mexico my home, they seem to forget that out of the last 16 years of my life, I have lived in Mexico only 2. I have lived in Spain, France, Canada, England, and thus I can’t really call Mexico my home. Not yet. Vancouver is still my home, it is the city where I grew and matured as a scholar and as a human being, and where I became the ever-famous Hummingbird604. And while the re-adaptation has been actually quite fast, because (a) I am a Mexican national, thus I am entitled to all the benefit Mexican citizens have, and (b) because I speak the language here.

Probably the biggest challenge has been starting from scratch. I don’t have a car here (haven’t bought one). I don’t know where to buy groceries yet, I have a plate and a bowl to my name, and a few items that my Mom gave me (a living room, a dining table with chairs, and my childhood bedroom’s bed). I don’t have a microwave, and I haven’t even had the time nor money to buy a new one. So, all in all, I can’t complain because I am starting with WAY more than what my parents started with.

The plus side? People here are incredibly friendly, super hard working, absolutely adorable, of course my job is absolutely amazing. And I have started using public transportation again. Specifically, peseros, or combis.

Combis

It will take a while, it definitely will. In the mean time, suffice it to say that I am doing the best I can with what I have.
